Move Well, Age Well: Why Movement Is the Language of Your Nervous System

Most people know that movement is "good for you."


We hear it all the time.


Walk more.


Exercise regularly.


Stretch.


Stay active.


But have you ever stopped to ask why movement is so important?


The answer goes far beyond stronger muscles or a healthier heart.


Movement is one of the primary ways your brain learns about your body. Every step you take, every time you turn your head, reach for a cup of coffee, or climb the stairs, thousands of tiny sensors in your muscles, joints and connective tissues are sending information to your brain.


Movement is the language of your nervous system.

In our previous articles, we explored how the nervous system acts as the master control system of the body, how posture reflects nervous system function, and how the environments we live in influence our health. Movement brings all of these ideas together, because it is one of the primary ways the brain gathers information about the world and our place within it.


And the more clearly your brain and body communicate, the better your body is able to adapt, regulate

and function throughout life.


Your Brain Learns Through Movement


We often think of the brain as sending messages to the body.


That is certainly true.


But communication doesn't only travel in one direction.


Your body is constantly talking back.


Specialised receptors in your muscles, joints, ligaments and skin continually tell your brain:

"This is where your arm is."

"Your head has just turned."

"You're walking on uneven ground."

"You're leaning slightly forward."


Scientists call this proprioception—our awareness of where our body is in space.


This information helps your brain coordinate balance, posture, movement and stability without you consciously thinking about it.


The more varied and meaningful this information is, the more accurately your brain can organise movement.

Your Nervous System Was Designed to Adapt


One of the most remarkable characteristics of the human body is its ability to adapt.


Whether you're learning to ride a bicycle, recovering from an injury or simply walking on a sandy beach instead of a paved road, your nervous system is constantly making small adjustments.


This ability to adapt is one of the foundations of health.


Rather than trying to keep everything perfectly still, the nervous system is continually responding to changes inside your body and in the world around you.


Movement provides much of the information it needs to make those adjustments.


Without movement, the brain receives less information.


With varied, comfortable movement, the nervous system has richer information to work with.


Earlier this year we explored the concept of reset and regulation. The ability to adapt is one of the hallmarks of a well-regulated nervous system, and movement provides some of the richest information the brain can use to make those adaptations.

There's a well-known saying:

"We don't stop moving because we grow older; we grow older because we stop moving."


While ageing is a natural part of life, many of the changes we associate with ageing are influenced by how much we continue to move.


Regular movement helps maintain:

  • balance

  • coordination

  • flexibility

  • confidence

  • strength

  • independence


Perhaps even more importantly, movement continues to stimulate the nervous system throughout life.


Every walk, every stretch and every change of position is another opportunity for your brain to receive valuable information.


Healthy ageing isn't about avoiding birthdays.


It's about continuing to give your body opportunities to adapt.


Movement Doesn't Have to Be Exercise


One of the biggest misconceptions about movement is that it only "counts" if you go to the gym.


In reality, your nervous system benefits from movement throughout the day.

Walking the dog.
